Clearing the way to understanding hoarding disorder

Studies show that the prevalence of hoarding disorder to be between 2 and 5% of the population, many of them elderly. Hoarding behaviors - difficulty discarding and excessive acquiring - can have severe consequences. Excessive clutter can increase risk of falling and fire hazards, and very often leads to isolation, shame, and embarrassment. Aging Life Care Professionals are often faced with hoarding behaviors when coordinating a move from a client’s home to an assisted living or skilled nursing facility. Moving and downsizing is a very traumatic time for those with hoarding disorder.

Gain a better understanding of clients who struggle with clutter (20 min)

Learn easy-to-use assessments and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) based interventions (30 min)

Discuss tips on how to communicate with clients with hoarding disorder (10 min)

Presenter Bio

Karin Lehr, LCSW,  is a clinician at Riverside Community Care in Newton Massachusetts where she uses Boston University's Hoarding Project's evidence-based group treatment for hoarding disorder protocol. She leads clutter support groups and provides in-home help in the community. In addition to hoarding, she works with people who present with anxiety, depression, PTSD, and eating disorders. She has an MSW from Boston University and an MA in nutrition from Tufts University.
