Session Description:

Did you know that on average seniors outlive their driving years by seven years?  "Taking away the keys" can be one of the most challenging topics for families and senior care professionals to have with elders, whose driving patterns may be putting themselves or others at risk.  This discussion convenes key stakeholders that have the appropriate tools to assess when it is no longer safe for an elder to continue driving.  Hear from a geriatrician, and two occupational therapists from two "Driving Retirement" programs to learn about their assessment procedures and tactics to remove the keys in a dignified and supportive manner.  They will also address some alternative transportation resources for those who are no longer driving.

  • Understand how to best partner with clinicians to make a sound and confident decision when taking away the keys (25 min)
  • Identify what stakeholders are critical to have on board when taking away the keys (20 min)
  • Learn about resources that take the "subjective" decision making away from family and that can professionally evaluate and assess driving capabilities (20 min)
  • Identify three transportation resources that seniors can use when they no longer drive (10  min)
  • Questions and Answers (10 min)
