Early Cognitive Impairment: Elderly Driving and High Risk Behaviors at the Edge of Incapacity

Do you have an aging client that is legally competent but making poor decisions? Do you represent a client whose parents deny symptoms of mental decline and refuse care or intervention? When is it time to take the car keys away? Who is your client?

These are common issues for professionals that work with an elderly clientele. Early cognitive decline is a challenging but common phase of aging. It can be a struggle, however, to find the balance between protecting the safety of the elder and the elder’s loved ones with protecting the elder’s rights and dignity.

Elderly driving is one emblematic example that will be addressed by an expert on the panel. The program will also address when and how to intervene with hazardous behaviors, such as self-neglect, hoarding, financial mismanagement, and social isolation. In addition to an elderly driving expert, each panel will include a representative from protective services and a geriatric clinician. Each panel will be moderated by an attorney that can address questions on legal capacity and the role of a power of attorney and health care proxy with an uncooperative elder.

Handouts will be uniform at each location.
